Monarch; not only autonomous but also fully electric

Monarch is a bit like the Tesla of the tractor world; a new tractor manufacturer that immediately focuses on a complete electric drive system and can work autonomously.

The first models from Monarch are relatively small and especially suitable for use in the yard and in orchards.

The research and development of the Monarch Tractor began in 2014. The California-based company designed the vehicle to increase labour productivity and maximise yield to support farmers’ existing operations. The company claims it is the “world’s first fully electric, driver optional, smart tractor integrated on a single platform.

What is most striking according to the supplier?
The Monarch Tractor is 100% electric and has zero tailpipe emissions. The average diesel tractor alone produces roughly 14 times the CO2 emissions as the average car. When a Monarch Tractor replaces a diesel tractor, it’s equivalent to removing the emissions generated by 14 gasoline passenger cars. Our projections suggest the Monarch Tractor can directly reduce 1% of Global GHG emissions through electrification, while regenerative practices enabled by the Monarch Tractor can reduce 4% of Global GHG emissions.

How does the robot tractor navigate and plan its work and paths?
The Monarch Tractor can be pre-programmed and assigned various tasks.  It also utilizes smart learning, and can be trained to carry out tasks through example.  Additionally, while running autonomously,  the operator can use Monarch Tractor’s interactive automation features, including Gesture and Shadow modes to have the tractor follow a worker on the job.

Monarch can work without a driver through pre-programming or through a self-learning system.

How are implements operated and controlled by the robot tractor?
The Monarch Tractor can work with farmers’ current implements as well as the next generation of smart implements. With a standard category I/II 3 point hitch and hydraulics current implements can be controlled by the tractor. Sensors and imaging are processed to provide critical data points that can be used for real-time implement adjustments as well as long-term yield estimates, current growth stages and other plant/crop health metrics. Utilizing machine learning, Monarch Tractor is able to digest this data and provide long-term analysis of field health, improving accuracy the longer it runs.

What are the safety features?
The Monarch Tractor is packed with safety features including roll and collision prevention, vision-based Power Take Off (PTO) safety and 360° cameras to keep operations running smoothly and employees safe, day or night.  The Monarch Tractor has vision systems that allow it to stop at a moment’s notice if an object or someone/something enters its path, making it the safest compact tractor.
The Monarch Tractor comes with troubleshooting and repair guides built right into the onboard tablet and web app, as well as remote support so farmers can identify and fix problems quickly.

What kind of work can the robot tractor do autonomously?
The Monarch Tractor does everything a traditional tractor does (plowing, cultivating, harvesting, etc.).  While running traditional operations Monarch sensor suite also provides scouting, mapping, data collection, and analysis. It was also built to power the next generation of smart sprayers, weeders, and other data-driven implements. This allows the farmer to work on something else on the farm, or if an employee wasn’t able to come in to work, the tractor already knows the path and can run the course and collect the data in real-time, sending it to the farmer’s mobile device instantly.

Can you switch off autonomous mode and continue as a manned tractor for difficult work/circumstances?
The Monarch Tractor can be controlled manually or autonomously. The Monarch Tractor utilizes the latest autonomous hardware and software technology to provide driver-assist and driver-optional operations. The tractor also has pitch and roll alerts, GPS detection and more to recognize if it is stuck or in a dangerous situation and notify an operator for support.

Via a smartphone or personal device, users receive tractor alerts, updates on current micro-weather conditions, detailed operations reports, data collection, analysis, and storage for more efficient farm planning.

How many units are currently in the field and where?
Based on our location in Livermore, California, Monarch Tractor’s initial customers are in close proximity to the world-famous Napa and Sonoma wine regions, and the company is now branching out to the fruits and orchards regions on the west coast from Oregon down to California.

Autonomy integrated in Yanmar’s proven standard tractors

The Japanese Yanmar offers four of its standard tractors with integrated autonomy from 88 to 113 hp. Recently the navigation system has been improved of Yanmar’s Robot Tractors.

Yanmar’s robot tractor can work in cooperation with another second manned tractor in one field.

Yanmar’s robotic agriculture technology has been under development for some time. Testing of the vehicle in its current form has been underway since 2015.  This year, Yanmar has made improvements to its robot tractor. Previously the Yanmar robot tractor needed its own ground base station for correction signals along with signals from the GNSS satellite.  The new system receives a multi-frequency signal allowing the tractor to receive local reference point positioning data to determine its position via VRS (Virtual Reference Station). This means it is no longer necessary to install a Yanmar base station. And the system can be used anywhere mobile signal is available.

What is most striking according to the supplier?
The robot tractor can work in cooperation with another second manned tractor in one field. It is also possible for the farmer to arrive at the field with the robot tractor, then set the robot tractor working the field autonomously, while the farmer carries out other work nearby.  Note: even in Japan, forerunner in the field of autonomy, it is currently not permitted for autonomous farm machinery to operate unsupervised.

How does the robot tractor navigate and plan its work and paths?
The operator boards the robot tractor and circles the perimeter of the field to complete the registration of the field data and start operation. From the next time onward, the registered field data can be called up to start work. The operator can set the work pattern and start/stop/resume work remotely using a specially designed tablet application.

The Yamar robot tractor is remotely adjustable and controllable using a specially designed tablet application.

How are implements operated and controlled by the robot tractor?
If the implements are ISOBUS compatible, it will be possible to control them with the robot tractor.  For this tractor must be put into the setting that allows communication between implement and tractor.

What are the safety features?
The areas in front of and behind the tractor are monitored and can be visually checked by operators using the control tablet for safety. And a laser sensor and ultrasound sensor detect obstacles for greater safety.

Whether in straight line or turning operation, a control algorithm ensures that the robot tractor will stop safely before the tractor deviates from the pre-programmed farming area. If the tractor is deviated by a fixed margin from the programmed route or if the tractor telemetry is interrupted, the tractor will safely stop operation.

What kind of work can the robot tractor do autonomously?
Almost everything you can do with a standard tractor; tilling, seeding, fertilizer distribution and ploughing. Except maneuvering in and around barnyard is not possible.

Can you switch off autonomous mode and continue as a manned tractor for difficult work/circumstances?
The operator can use the robot tractor as a regular tractor.

Yanmar’s autonomous tractor in a master-slave combination; the driver on the tractor behind can easily keep an eye on the robot tractor in front.

How many units are currently in the field and where?
Since the start of sales in 2018, Yanmar’s robot tractors have been highly praised by many customers, but we don’t publish sales figures.
