Our platform calculates the whole mission plan, taking into consideration the entire fleet and mission characteristics. The tractor then executes the plan while updating in real-time. We control all the tractor’s parameters, vehicle speed, engine rpm, PTO speed, et cetera. It’s a geo-fenced operation.

How are implements operated and controlled by your system?
The tractor system easily interfaces with sprayers, mowers, harvesters and discing implements, and can integrate with smart implement controllers (like AgOtter rate control and calibration devices).

What are the safety features?
The tractor system employs a variety of safety features including:

Driver assistance and relieving system

The Braun Maschinenbau Vineyard Pilot Assistant system is based on German Robot Makers’ RowCropPilot assist lane guidance system. The company is the exclusive integrator of the RowCropPilot system on Fendt tractors.

Especially for the new generation of Fendt Vario tractors, it is also possible to connect the steering of the tractor with the VPA-system. The result is a semi-autonomous tractor control that causes the tractor to execute steering commands and automatically drive in the middle of the row.

What is the most striking according to the supplier?
Mechanical undercutting of fruit trees demands the utmost concentration of the driver. Not only is precise steering of the tractor in the narrow vineyard rows necessary, it also requires the constant control and steering of mid-mounted tools left and right as well as often additional control of further implements. In order to relieve the driver in the control of the tools, Braun Maschinenbau has developed the so-called Vineyard Pilot Assistant (VPA) system. An independent system that controls the position of the implements in the interaxle, rear and front of the tractor.

How does the robot tractor with your system navigate and plan its work and paths?
With the aid of a laser scanner, both the contour of the soil and the individual vines are recorded and a three-dimensional profile image is generated. The information is transferred from the Braun VPA-system to the implements in the intermediate axle area. There is a permanent automatic positioning of the tools to the stem. At the same time, the width adjustable mulcher can also be controlled in the rear area.

How are implements operated and controlled by your system?
After activation of the system, the intermediate axle units automatically move to the working position (width and depth) when entering the vineyard rows at the optimum position. At the end of the row, the implements automatically move back to their parking/idle position.

What are the safety features?
There are various feedbacks from the system when there is an error on the hardware or software.

Soil cultivation, mechanical weed control and mowing.

Yes, there is always an option to switch off autonomous mode and drive the tractor manually.

It uses teach and playback technology, generally in orchard and vineyard applications. In some applications the system calculates the paths by itself such as for grass silage production and planting.

Our system is equipped with an obstacle detection system and if required, we deliver technology for people detection (day/night). If the tractor is equipped with Canbus, we can monitor all important errors and the system is also self-controlling. In case of wire damage, computer glitch, or lack of communication of any part of the system, everything stops (engine, tractor, et cetera).

This was never calculated because it is too difficult to calculate. Some customers calculate only labour costs, some calculate convenience and reliability (24/7 work ability). Some are just technological geeks. Labour costs are different in every country.

GPX Solutions’ iQuus autonomous system has been developed to integrate within current technological developments like Isobus, task control (TC) and the high-tech tractor controls. The system is ready to go full Isobus this year to ensure maximum multi tractor brand usage.

GPX Solutions says its iQuus system includes a Raven CR7 terminal and a Raven RS1 receiver to ensure maximum usage of the whole add-on package.

What is the most striking according to the supplier?
We have designed the autonomous solution as an aftermarket add-on package and included a Raven CR7 terminal with a Raven RS1 receiver to ensure maximum usage of the whole package. So next to autonomous driving it is possible to use the full Isobus functionality and guided driving when the operator is present. With Isobus UT (Universal Terminal), TC (Task Control) and in the future TIM (Tractor Implement Management), our system will be the perfect companion in the modern tractors.

How does the robot tractor with your system navigate and plan its work and paths?
We are not using the ‘teach-and-playback’ principle as previously known. Our focus is to re-drive possible paths which have been proven by the operator. Our goal was to develop an autonomous tool for growers with row crops like vineyards, orchards, hop fields and tree nurseries. Many of these special crops have row and drive patterns that will exist for multiple years, sometimes even up to 15 years! After an operator has captured/taught a routing, the iQuus GUi gives all the freedom for the operator to automate the tractor’s functionalities.

Routings can be ‘combined’ to a new routing. For example when an operator has plot A, plot B, plot C and plot D. These routings can be combined via transportation routes or just by combining the starting- and ending coordinates.

We are working on a path-planning tool based on drone images. This service should be available in 2022 and will enhance a quicker way of path building through the field.

Within our field of operations we see new demanding circumstances asking for hybrid vehicle control based on satellite localisation and vison/LIDAR. This will be our new feature for the future to drive under trees based on vision and to use satellites for tractor functions.

How are implements operated and controlled by your system?
Our way of being in control is to communicate via Isobus so the iQuus system knows the implement is working correctly. The parameters necessary to function correctly will be a consideration off the implement manufacturer. To make operations safer and easier, we’ve designed a connector which extends the safety network and has a function as dead man’s switch to check if the implement is still attached to the tractor.

What are the safety features?
Reading of the internal safety functions like fluid temperatures, fluid levels and other things. Modern tractors will generate a notification to the operator when something is wrong. This is our input for tractor malfunctions.

For the surroundings and obstacles and people detection we use LiDAR based obstacle detection in the direction of movement, emergency stops around the vehicle and remote control to start and stop the vehicle.

Furthermore we offer amongst others external control and safety for loss of power input from the battery or generator and external control of an emergency handbrake. When our iQuus system thinks it is not able to control the vehicle good enough for the required speed, it will adjust the operating speed.

What kind of work can your system do autonomously?
Our system can automate all tractor functionalities without compromising on the tractor’s usability. We rely on the implement manufacturers to have enough control at their machines to ensure autonomous driving when the implement is controllable by Isobus.

Yes, operators can switch between autonomous and manual mode at any time.

How many systems are currently in the field and where?
Our company was founded in 2017 and the first prototype was released in 2018. In 2019 we decided to redesign our complete hardware- and software infrastructure to ensure the quality our industry demands.

So far four Fendt tractors have been made autonomous that are all working in the Netherlands. 2021 will be our first commercial year and we are working on a dealer network to ensure customer service and support.

What is the cost price per ha compared with a manned tractor?
This is unknown to us because the tractor usage per company/field varies greatly. In our region in The Netherlands, hourly costs of good drivers is somewhere between €25 and €35 per hour. Our vision is that one good driver or operator can be deployed for other tasks or to control multiple tractors at once. In a worst-case scenario, one operator can be saved with annually 500 operational hours.

Autonomous operations as a service for American farmers

Sabanto offers autonomous farming operations as a service. This means you can’t buy their technology, but you can hire them to do planting, tine weeding, rotary hoeing, cultivating and vertical tillage on your fields.

What is the most striking according to the supplier?
We have built a fleet of 60 and 90 hp autonomous tractors and have planted, tine weeded, cultivated, and performed tillage throughout US states Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. The systems are deployed in multiple fields, on multiple farms, across multiple states and are monitored by our staff hundreds of miles away.

How does the robot tractor with your system navigate and plan its work and paths?
Given the path boundary, fuel and seed capacity and other agronomic constraints, we process the path and any other settings in the cloud and download said path to the remote system. Once verified, the system is initiated remotely. The system continually monitors its own performance and detects any anomalies. Additionally, the data is streamed back to our ‘mission control’, monitored by our staff.

How are implements operated and controlled by your system?
We closely monitor the performance and status of the attached implement and add appropriate sensors to the implement to detect anomalies.

We use a safety system to detect obstacles and closely monitor the health of both tractor and implement. We also have front and backwards facing cameras streaming these live video streams on the system.

Harsh conditions like these don’t bother the cabless autonomous Sabanto tractors whereas a tractor driver probably wouldn’t go out and tillage a field in these conditions.

Automate any type of vehicle and operation

Thornfield vehicle guidance systems by ThornTek can be retrofitted to many types of vehicles and machines to perform various operations on farm land and on farms. There’s currently two systems operational in China.

This combination is performing autonomous broad acre seeding.

What is the most striking according to the supplier?
Thornfield vehicle guidance systems can be retrofitted to many machines for precision driving at +/- 4 cm accuracy at speeds around 10 km/h and higher speeds at reduced accuracy. It controls steerable implements with +/- 2cm accuracy at speeds of 10 km/h.

How does the robot tractor with your system navigate and plan its work and paths?
Licenced users have access to an online tool that will generate paths using AB lines, smart device (such as a smart phone) based coordinates and a set of parameters. The tractor/vehicle can be positioned using the remote controller. Autonomous driving is then started using the remote controller.

How are implements operated and controlled by your system?
Implement folding/lifting is programmed at the path generation stage. Any number of sensors can be interfaced. Appropriate action can then be taken, for example, depleting chemical will text message the operator.

What are the safety features?
The ThornTek system relies on tractor’s warning and error messages to stop or shutdown (depending on warnings or critical errors). ThornTek recommends a third-party collision avoidance system supplier. ThornTek System automatically puts the tractor into safe mode if any of the software or hardware failure of the retrofitted components is detected.
